If you’re ever in the Athens, Alabama, area and looking for something to do, rest assured you’ll never have a shortage of sights and activities to enjoy. Nevertheless, we’ve been able to narrow it a few of our favorites, and here they are.

UG White Mercantile

This general store was first opened in 1917 by a local farmer for farmers. Over the years, UG White Mercantile has expanded from a hardware store to a dry goods country store where you can find anything from novelty toys like train sets to outdoor gear and apparel.

Today, it’s a great place to go for unique quality gifts, hiking equipment, or just some good old-fashioned southern hospitality. Plus, you don’t have to be a candy lover to enjoy a walk down memory lane through UG White’s selection of old-fashioned candy.

Locals and visitors alike appreciate UG White most for its vibrant personality with vintage roots. They offer eclectic goods at great prices, but many visit simply for how fun this dry goods country store is to walk through.

Although, if you’re in need of locally made jams, sauces, or candles – or the kitchen gadgets to make your own, including a snazzy apron – this is the place to go. Just be sure to snag a UG White t-shirt on your way out to commemorate this old-timey experience!

Limestone Drug

If you are one of the lucky few who grew up going to a family owned pharmacy, then you understand why it might seem unimaginable to ever leave.

When you walk into a room filled with honest, helpful, and hospitable people like the staff at Limestone Drug, you feel like family. This is an invaluable factor, especially when you want to feel comfortable asking about your meds or other healthcare needs.

But even if you don’t have a prescription to fill, Limestone Drug is much more than a drug store. It’s a local favorite and must-visit spot for ice cream or a coke float from their old-fashioned soda fountain.

Whether you need medications, groceries, greeting cards, unique gifts, or a tasty treat, be sure to pop into Limestone Drug for all things good for the body and soul – including warm welcomes and smiles!

Kreme Delight

Kreme Delight has earned its spot in Athens history after years of fast, friendly, and delicious service. On the days you crave ice cream – and let’s face it, a foot-long chili dog pairs well – this is the small town shop to try.

At Kreme Delight, where soft-serve swirl cones are a crowd-pleaser, you aren’t limited to only that. From brownie sundaes to banana splits and coke and root beer floats, it’s an Athens atmosphere worth experiencing on any day, especially in the summer. This place truly is a delight!

Judge James E. Horton Statue

This life-sized statue of the Honorable James E. Horton, a Circuit Judge for the Eighth Circuit Court in Alabama starting in the 1920s, is located on the square in downtown Athens.

Judge Horton is known for his overturning a wrongful, guilty conviction of nine black defendants by an all-white jury in the infamous Scottsboro case in 1933. While the trial was held in Decatur, Horton’s decision was made right in downtown Athens in the Limestone County Courthouse, blocks from Horton’s home.

This statue was erected in his honor and to serve as a reminder to do the good and right thing, despite personal consequences and differing popular opinions.

Today, Athen’s citizens gather around this monument to remember Judge Horton’s legacy and human rights contributions not only to their town but also to the United States judicial system. If you’re ever in downtown Athens, be sure to take a moment to read about Judge Horton’s impressive accomplishments and pay respects to this early civil rights hero.
